Ovid Technologies Chooses Unbound Medicine's CogniQ™ for New Handheld Delivery Platform

CogniQ provides the knowledge management infrastructure to build
Ovid@Hand and improve delivery of content and search results to mobile clinicians and researchers

Charlottesville, VA, June 4, 2001 — Healthcare professionals and researchers will be able to obtain information anytime, anywhere thanks to a new partnership between Unbound Medicine, Inc., a leading provider of medical knowledge management solutions, and Ovid Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of electronic information to the scientific, technical and medical markets.

The partnership provides Ovid with a next-generation mobile delivery platform — Ovid@Hand — that gives users access to Ovid's resources and capabilities from a handheld device. As part of the agreement, Unbound Medicine will customize CogniQ™, its integrated handheld and Web-based knowledge management platform, to create this new product.

Ovid@Hand provides real-time medical and scientific information on a handheld device with links to corresponding in-depth information available from Ovid Online. The product will include a drug information resource and tables of contents and abstracts from Journals@Ovid, Ovid's database of more than 500 full text journals, among other capabilities. Ovid introduced a prototype of Ovid@Hand at the Medical Library Association conference in May.

"As the demand for handheld solutions has grown, the mobilization of knowledge has become a top priority," said Dean Vogel, president and CEO of Ovid Technologies. "The partnership with Unbound Medicine is ideal because we are able to offer an advanced mobile information platform that is integrated with our extensive Web-based resources."

"We are delighted to provide Ovid with a customized mobile solution for the company's large institutional customer base," said William Detmer, MD, president and CEO of Unbound Medicine. "Leveraging Ovid's rich collection of medical and scientific resources, Ovid@Hand will make it easier than ever for users to stay abreast of the latest advances and to answer questions when and where they arise."

Using the CogniQ Platform, partners can:

  • Create a mobile portal that delivers diverse types of content via the same user interface
  • Deliver targeted content and messages based on a user's profile
  • Update handheld content on a daily basis
  • Capture searches and requests for full content on a handheld and answer them with in-depth resources on the Web, and
  • Strengthen one-to-one relationships with end users.

"A key advantage of Unbound Medicine's platform is that it not only delivers tailored information to mobile users, but also links users back into our online system," said Cheryl Chisnell, vice president, clinical and academic products at Ovid. "Linking mobile delivery with our Web-based resources enables clinicians to have the best of both worlds."
